Purpose
Time Off In Lieu (TOIL) can be managed within NHS At Work. This guide covers adding TOIL to a medic’s profile and recording TOIL taken against rostered shifts.
Viewing and Adding TOIL Hours
- Navigate to ‘Administration’, ‘Organisation’, and then ‘Staff List.’
- Start typing in the medic’s first or surname and the medic will appear in the report below. Select the medic to open their profile.
- In ‘Profile details,’ navigate to the TOIL hours field.
Top Tip! Click on the ‘clock and arrow’ icon in a medic’s profile to view the TOIL audit history. The ‘Staff TOIL’ column shows remaining TOIL hours. The ‘Consumed TOIL’ column details the shifts that TOIL hours have been applied to. This is in chronological order.
- Click on the ‘pencil’ icon to edit the TOIL balance. You can type in the number of hours or use the arrows to select the required time.
- Click ‘Save’.

Assigning TOIL Hours
- Click the ellipsis on the shift where TOIL is to be taken and select ‘TOIL Hours’. The dropdown will highlight the available TOIL hours.
- Type in the number of hours or use the arrows to select the required time.
- Click ‘Save’. A ‘clock’ icon appears on the shift.
Top Tip! If you want to record where TOIL hours were used, click the shift ellipsis and select ‘shift note’. Type the relevant details and then click ‘Save’.
